Tangier's literary and artistic past
Why writers and painters kept coming to this city.
From 1923 to 1956 Tangier was an international zone, and it drew artists from everywhere.
Henri Matisse painted here in 1912 and 1913. The American writer Paul Bowles settled in the city in 1947, and writers of the Beat Generation followed.
You can still feel that history in the old cafés, the Kasbah and the small museums of the medina.
